The Top 6 Myths about Trampolines

Trampolines have a bad rep. When the word is mentioned, you probably think back to your childhood where trampoline injuries were common. But trampolines have come a long way since we were kids. And when used appropriately (and with a little common sense) trampolines can be a fantastic addition to your backyard.

So we’ve compiled a list of the top six trampoline myths to show you why they’re wrong.

1 – Trampolines Are Dangerous

Just like all outdoor activities, if used incorrectly, trampolines can be dangerous. But they don't have to be. Trampolines today have come a long way since the traditional trampoline we experienced as kids.

There are now trampolines which have been created with safety top-of-mind. Pinch-points have been removed, impact areas and hard surfaces have all been removed from the Springfree Trampoline patented design - we've eliminated all the impact points that caused 90% of product-related trampoline injuries.

Most trampolines today also have safety nets, which prevents falls to the ground.

And practicing safe jumping goes a long way. Much like you encourage children to play safely on a playground, you should encourage them to play safely on a trampoline.

2 – Trampolines Can’t Be Used Safely

Yes, they can! Just like you wear bike helmets and have rules for swimming pools, you should have rules for safe trampoline play. We highly recommend following these five safe jumping rules to make your jump time even safer:

  1. No Flips: Untrained jumpers can land on their head and neck, causing serious injury.
  2. One at a Time: Having a single jumper eliminates the chance of collisions and injuries. And NEVER DOUBLE-BOUNCE!  tgoma games for Springfree trampolines only work with one jumper at a time, removing the worry of multiple jumpers.
  3. Supervise Jumping: A responsible adult should keep an eye on the jumper.
  4. Safe Clearance: Keep enough space around the trampoline (we recommend 1.5 metres) to allow room for the net to flex out. It’s also important to have safe overhead clearance of 6m.
  5. Keep it Locked: Zip the net when the trampoline is not being used will keep unwanted jumpers away.

3 – They Twist and Strain Your Knees

Some say that trampolines twist and strain your knees, or bend you leg muscles and joints. Thankfully, while this may be true for some trampoline designs, it certainly isn't the case for all trampoline types and designs. Trampolines have come a long way since the traditional spring-based trampoline, and many trampolines have been designed with a soft, safe bounce.

The smoother bounce of a Springfree Trampoline is much gentler on knees and joints than the traditional spring-based trampoine. The bouncy Springfree mat acts as a great absorption pad, taking all the force when you land and preventing jarring of ankles, knees and your spine. Springfree Trampoline's composite rods are designed to work in unison, bending inwards as a jumper bounces and creating a low impact exercise.

We recommend having a jump on the trampoline brand you're considering first, so you can experience its' bounce first-hand.

4 – All Trampolines Are The Same

No, all trampolines are not the same and they are not all equal. Trampolines come in many different sizes – large, medium, small – and different shapes – circle, square, oval. And not just that, there are different types of trampolines – springless trampolines, spring-based trampolines and fitness trampolines. You have lots of options to find the best trampoline for you and your family. Many trampolines look the same, or very similar, but they can be very different across brand, make and model. Doing your research is a very important part of your pre-purchase decision-making.

5 – Trampolines Are Just For Kids

Kids love trampolines, but they are just as much fun for adults too! You can add it to your exercise routine, use it to reduce stress and turn it into an outdoor activity for the whole family. Set family challenges to find out who can do the most jumps in a minute or who can do the most seat drops. A trampoline can be a great way to engage the entire family in the backyard.

6 – Trampolines Ruin Your Grass

We get this one a lot. People assume that if you have a trampoline the grass underneath will die because it’s not getting enough sun. But this depends on the backyard. Backyards that get a lot of sun don’t tend to experience grass dying underneath. However, if the trampoline is in a shaded area (or there are lots trees) then the grass can yellow out. If this happens we recommend placing mulch underneath.

To avoid this from happening, choose the best spot in your yard for the trampoline – one away from trees and shaded areas. And if you’re worried, you can always move the trampoline to multiple spots to ensure the grass isn’t blocked too long.

Picking a trampoline with Shifting Wheels is a good way to make sure your trampoline is easy to move around your backyard, to keep your grass looking green and happy!

At Springfree we believe that kids deserve safe, active outdoor play. That’s why we re-engineered the trampoline from the ground up. To give families a fun way to play outside and give parents piece of mind that their children are safe.
